How we do it

At the British Centre, we are strong believers in the philosophy of beginning with the client, and not with ourselves! We give more importance to the needs of both the contracting client and the students who wish to learn English.

Once the language learning objectives of both have been defined, we take a look at which programme will best suit these needs. Through this procedure, we don’t restrict ourselves to just one methodology; we use what’s best for you from an ‘a la carte’ menu of courses. These can generally be divided into two major areas:

 

GENERAL ENGLISH PROGRAMMES

General English programmes are methodologically connected to a ‘Communicative Approach’ to language learning, based on the four macro-skills of language, Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Methodologists’ views of the Communicative Approach lean heavily towards exploiting the student’s ability to be creative, be a team player, deal with challenges, be responsible for his own learning, and most of all, enjoy participating in the whole learning experience. We feel all of these abilities are commonly found in up-to-date best working practices in most enterprises today. So why not use them to learn the language!! After all, who are we to disagree with the world’s most respected methodologists or the top corporate’s views on best practices!

English for Specific Purposes

In ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses, we follow much the same procedure as that of general English courses but place more emphasis on the needs or specialities that the language is required for. These are discovered via a diagnostic evaluation providing information about the student as well as strengths and weaknesses regarding his specific needs Inevitably, groups here are far smaller than in general English programmes, and more often than not one-to-one, in which the focus is primarily on individual improvement of certain language skills, these usually being job-specific, as well as the short-term and long-term goals that a student or his employee may have.
Methodology tends to change, therefore. The student often dictates the style and execution of a class session, swaying it towards his needs and goals accordingly. Throughout the courses offered here, the professor needs to draw on many skills to enable learning to take place, not just be a teacher but a guide, monitor and even a business partner.
